This may be the end... (ISO: Tilly)

It was coming to a close, he could feel it! They had to be winning, there was no way they weren’t. After all the months of planning and planning and more planning, there was no way it couldn’t go their way. Even without Dumbledore things seemed to be going well, for the Order at least. Scott had been in the Hogwarts group, and his goal was to get to the Dimidium house and help those kids out, guarding them as best he could. A few of the Professors had come upon them and Scott did his best to draw them away from the students himself.

They had charged up the former Gryffindor corridor, Scott doing his best to get rid of the Death Eaters, but not kill them. Sure, they would kill him the first chance they got, but Scott didn’t want to resort to that until there was no other option. It was two against one, and Scott wasn’t coming out the best in the fight. The words to the killing curse came to his lips, but Scott hesitated.

It was that moment of hesitation that was his downfall. The taller professor/death eater cursed him, knocking Scott to his feet, crashing into a suit of armor as he went down. The other professor walked over to Scott, taking slow deliberate steps as she went. “So, it’s little Price, isn’t it? Course, you weren’t the littlest when you went to this God-forsaken school, were you?”

The other professor walked up. “That’s right… you had a brother, didn’t you? Did you ever know what happened to him? He tried to help… and he was killed. It was too easy…” The death eaters ugly face contorted into an evil smile.

Scott could feel the hatred rising up inside of him again. He knew that his brother had died that night, course they’d never heard officially, but he’d been gone for all that time, what else could’ve happened? Scott tried to stand up, tried to pay back the people who had murdered his brother, but they were too quick for him. Before he even knew what was happening there was blood sputtering out of his arm, his legs, his chest. They were smallish cuts, but enough to do the job. With a manical smile, the pair of professors left, not a word was exchanged.

After a few moments Scott could no longer hear their footsteps. He was alone and he was just bleeding faster and faster as time went on. One of the death eaters had kicked his wand away from him, Scott couldn’t reach it. He was alone. He was going to die without seeing his parents… his brothers… Tilly… Tilly, she was so good to him. Sure, whatever they were was confusing, but it didn’t matter. He cared about her. And now he was never going to get to see him again.

Scott let his eyes close for a few moments, his mind dipping in and out of consciousness. He could hear his brother’s voice every so often, sometimes his mother’s, sometimes Tilly, even Christy once. When he was conscious he knew what was going on, but when he wasn’t Scott was happy. It was an unconscious moment when footsteps started approaching.

After Ben had gone, fading in to the air like smoke, Tilly had stood alone in the common room for a few minutes. He was gone for good this time, but at least she had finally been able to say goodbye. There was something after death, he had shown her that, but she knew she couldn’t get there until her time here was up. Whether she died tonight or died when she was eighty, Ben would be waiting for her. She tried her cheeks and left the common room without a backward glance, that tower was for future students and there wouldn’t be any future students if they didn’t win. Once outside the door she glanced in both directions, not sure where she could go. Some instinct told her to go right, so she did, wand at the ready in case she came across any Deatheaters.

Instead she found a scene that was scarily familiar. A male figure, with dark brown hair, lying on the ground. For a second she wondered if Ben hadn’t disappeared, if his second chance had included being brought back to life in the corridor of Hogwarts, but then she noticed the blood. There was no way he would get a full second chance at life only to have it taken away again seconds later. It was only when she was closer than she realised it was Scott, and then she broke in to a run, she hadn’t wanted to get too close before in case it was a Deatheater but seeing him there made her forget all sense of safety. She knelt next to him, he was passing in and out of consciousness, the pool of blood slowly growing as he bled to death from several nasty cuts.

“SCOTT!”

At her shout he seemed to focus slightly, looking directly at her for a second before his head lolled to one side. She had already lost one man she loved that night and while she didn't love Scott in the same way she loved Ben she was definitely not going to lose someone else.

“Damnit Scott hold on!”

She ripped his shirt open and tried to assess the damage. Gav O’Mallley had been giving everyone in the Order basic healing lessons for the last few weeks and she knew from her own personal experience that she could heal cuts, but she while she could heal them she couldn’t heal them well, her back was testament to how badly she could do things.

“I’m sorry Scott but I think you’re going to end up with some scars. But at least you’ll have something to show the grandkids.”

She started on the worst one, his arm, which was giving out so much blood she was wondering if the spell had caught an artery. She concentrated on the lesson’s Gav had given them, focus on healing the serious part first and then move on to surface wounds. The bleeding slowed and then stopped as she healed it. Hoping she had done that right she moved on his chest, and then his leg. When she was done she waved a hand in front of his eyes.

“Scott? Can you hear me?”

“Scott… You need to pay them back… You need to make them pay for what they did to your family…”
But Chris, I can’t… I don’t think I can move.
“You can, you’ll make it though this… And you need to make them pay…”

“SCOTT!”

That wasn’t the same voice that had just been speaking, that had been Scott’s brother Chris. That voice was different, female, and familiar to Scott. He forced his eyes to open, and he tried to focus on the person in front of him. He could see red hair, lots of it. The name Tilly floated around in his head before Scott went unconscious again.

This time it was a very strange thing he experienced. He could still feel and knew what was going on around him, but he was seeing things of his past. He saw his acceptance letter from Hogwarts, his brother’s same letter, meeting Christy for the first time, the overthrowing of Hogwarts, joining the Order… the list went on and on. But at the same time he could hear Tilly speaking around him.

“I’m sorry Scott but I think you’re going to end up with some scars. But at least you’ll have something to show the grandkids.”

Scott did his best to focus on the woman in front of him, but he was struggling through the fog that was in front of his eyes. He felt a very odd sensation on his arm, the same sensation on his chest, and then finally his legs. With each one he started to feel slightly better, but not by much. It was however, enough for Scott to be able to open his eyes, and actually register who was sitting in front of him: Tilly.

“Scott? Can you hear me?”

Scott attempted a smile, which really came out more as a grimace as he stared at her. “Tilly,” he mouthed, with no sound coming out. He reached a hand out to her, it didn’t reach very far, but she did take his hand. “Tilly…” he mouthed again, but this time a small little whisper, barely audible, came out.

When he mouthed a word, without actually saying something, Tilly worried that she was too late. She tempted to smack him round the face to try and rouse him but it probably wouldn’t work, he wasn’t in and out of consciousness due to being hit on the head but thanks to blood loss. His hand reached out and she took it in both hers, trying to ignore the little voice that was wishing this was what had happened to Ben. If only the Deatheater’s hadn’t thrown the killing curse at him, and had simply injured him, so someone could make it in time to save him.

“Tilly…”

She just about heard it that time. So he recognised her and he could speak, that was a good sign, right? She wished they hadn’t sent Gav O’Malley to the camps, she could really do with a Healer right now to make sure she had done everything right and make sure Scott was going to be okay. The corridor was freezing, it was March and long past midnight, and his clothes were wet with blood. She needed to get him in the warm, out of his clothes and in to some blankets. He needed sleep and there was no way he could sleep out here.

“Come on Scott, we need to get out of here before you catch a cold.”

She took his hand and pulled his arm over her shoulder, holding it in place while she wrapped her arm around his waist. He was heavy, but he managed to find his feet, and soon they were standing up, although Scott was at an odd angle thanks to the fact that he was a lot taller than her and she was trying to hold him up. They wobbled their way down the corridor until they got to the first door, hanging open as the previous occupant had run out to deal with the problem of the Order attack. She pushed it open properly and helped Scott over to the bed. She went back and checked they hadn’t been followed, then closed the door and locked it, if any Deatheaters came back they would struggle to get through the door. She turned round and saw Scott slowly sliding off the bed, she ran back and caught him, pushing him back gently.

“Come on Scott, we need to get you out of these clothes otherwise you’re going to freeze.”

Tilly being the one who found him was really poetic justice. She’d saved him (in a manner of speaking) when he found out about Christy being married to Daniel Cuthbert. Scott had been more than a little bit of a mess when he found out about that situation, and Tilly had been there for him. He couldn’t have been more grateful to her. He’d learned to care for her over the last year or so, no not in the way he’d cared about Christy, nobody was ever going to get that from him again. But he cared about her just the same.

“Come on Scott, we need to get out of here before you catch a cold.”

Scott attempted to nod, but he didn’t have the strength. In an awkward fashion Tilly pulled his arm around her shoulders and got him standing. Scott being a fair bit taller than Tilly it looked funny, but with her supporting him Scott was able to get on his feet just enough to wobble around the corridor. Scott’s head lolled to the side as they searched for somewhere to get warm. Scott was starting to feel the cold in the corridor, it was cutting right through his sweater and jeans.

Thankfully for Scott they found a professors office with a warm fire and a tea kettle that was whistling- clearly ready for some tea leaves. Tilly got him over to the professor’s bed and dropped him on it. Scott attempted to stay sitting on the bed, but he was too weak to hold himself up. Slipping down the bed Scott tried to stop himself, but thankfully Tilly caught him before he hit the floor. She gently got him back on the bed, and he laid down this time.

“Come on Scott, we need to get you out of these clothes otherwise you’re going to freeze.”

Scott heard her, but his mind didn’t register what she was saying. All Scott knew was that she was gently tugging at his clothes, she’d never been that gentle when taking off his clothes before. A playful smirk pulled at his lips (course it probably came out as more of a frown), and Scott attempted to brush away Tilly’s hands. “Not right now sweetheart…” he said softly. Scott had never used any term of endearment when talking to Tilly before, she wouldn’t allow him. It was his condition that made him forget he wasn’t allowed to say those things. He’d wanted to say lots of things to her before, but he was never permitted.

Undressing a man was easy, undressing a man who was only half awake and seemed to be getting the wrong idea entirely was incredibly difficult. His clothes were sticky with his blood which made getting them off even more gross, she didn’t want too much to get in to the sheets as that would just make the whole point of getting him under them pointless. He pushed her hands away as she tugged at his jumper, a strange expression on his face.

“Not right now sweetheart…”

She opened her mouth to correct him, and then shut it. Normally she didn’t let him say things like that, she was Tilly and he was Scott, and the only way to keep things simple was to keep that wall up. If you started to call each other sweetheart and darling then soon you’d end up falling in love. She didn’t need that from Scott, what she wanted from him was being able to have sex with someone and then not get kicked out of bed afterwards, or pick up money on the way out, that and falling asleep next to him made her feel like less of a whore. She wasn’t sure what Scott got out of it, possibly a chance to forget Christy for a while, perhaps he was like her and simply used sex to get away from things that he didn’t want to think about.

But this time she left it. He had been injured, he was still ill and suffering from the effects of blood loss, he wasn’t sure what he was saying. And she was still shaken from seeing Ben, if she closed her eyes she could almost hear him saying those words instead of Scott. She had never seen the similarity between them before but it was there, height, dark hair, similar facial structure, but Ben had had bulkier muscle than Scott. Scott was still a very good looking man, if he wasn’t then there was no way they would have got as far as they had in the past, but he wasn’t Ben.

“Come on Scott, you’re all wet and sticky, just lie still and I’ll sort it.”

With some difficulty she managed to get his jumper over his head, and then his t-shirt, before pulling off his socks and then unbuttoning his jeans and tugging them off, with Scott alternatively trying to stop her, or trying to undress her as well, occasionally doing as she said and simply lying back, closing his eyes, and apparently dozing for a few seconds. She left him in his boxers so he wouldn’t get completely the wrong idea and pulled the covers over him. She dropped the clothes in a pile in a corner of the room, took the kettle off and debated making some tea before deciding against it, and then sat on the edge of the bed. Scott had fallen asleep, his skin pale against the pillow, but his breathing was deep and even and his temperature was normal, she was fairly certain he would be okay. She reached out and pushed some hair away from his forehead, then glanced over at the door. She should go and check on the Order, they might need her, Scott would be fine here and she could run back to check on him in an hour.

She stood up but before she could step away she felt a hand close around her wrist.

Scott was having a really hard time staying awake. He knew Tilly was pulling at his clothes, but he couldn’t do anything about it. Scott could remember having been hurt in the fight, but he didn’t really register that he was still hurt. He thought Tilly was trying to take his clothes off for the reason she usually took them off.

“Come on Scott, you’re all wet and sticky, just lie still and I’ll sort it.”

Wet and sticky? Why on earth was he wet and sticky? Scott brushed her hands away from him again, shaking his head, and then promptly fell asleep. He did that several times, he would wake up when Tilly moved him enough that it would jar him, brush her hands away, but then fall right back asleep.

When he woke up again he was nice and warm, with a hand brushing hair off of his forehead. A tiny smile broke out across his face, but it was hardly visible to anybody but him. Just as his eyes opened Tilly got up from the bed and turned away from her. Scott sat up a bit, grabbing onto her wrist as she turned.

“Tilly… Please don’t leave.”

“Tilly… Please don’t leave.”

Tilly stopped and looked back at him. He looked tired and ill, on second thoughts leaving him might not be such a good idea. The previous occupant of this room could come back, and if they did Scott would be too weak to fight them off. She had already lost Ben because he run off and found the enemy was too strong, she didn’t want Scott to find the same thing. If he woke up in a few hours feeling better he could easily wander off and stumble in to a stray Deatheater. She gently pushed his hand off her wrist.

“It’s okay, I’m not leaving, I’m just checking the door.”

Once he was settled she made certain the door was locked and wedged a chair under the door handle, even if someone unlocked it they would struggle to get in. Then she went back to sitting on the end of the bed. After an hour the fire had died down and it started to get chilly. Scott was fast asleep and she was starting to feel quite tired herself. She would be wary about sleeping in a bed with a man, but this was Scott, he wasn’t exactly serial rapist of the year, and her fingers were starting to go numb with the cold. Eventually being uncomfortable over ruled any worries she had, she slipped off the end of the bed and walked around to the empty side, kicked her shoes off, and slipped in next to Scott under the covers.

Scott was just conscious enough to see that Tilly had turned around to look at him. He tried to keep his grip strong on her arm, but that wasn't very easy, he was feeling very sleepy, he just wanted to sleep for a good long time. It seemed like ages since they'd started the attack, like it had been days since the beginning.

“It’s okay, I’m not leaving, I’m just checking the door.”

Scott fell into a fitful sleep when Tilly moved away from him, and every sound that was made would rouse him. It wasn't until Tilly got into bed next to him, that he was fully awake again.

"Tilly?" he said softly. When he realized it was her he put his arm around her middle, and promptly fell asleep again.

This time, the dream he had was for one, memorable and two one of the strangest in his life. He was at St. Mungos, in a Labor and Delivery room. It was almost as if Scott was standing above his body, looking down on him coaching somebody through the labor and birthing process. The 'other' Scott was holding this woman's hand, wiping her forehead as she pushed. He focused on the woman's face, but there were no discernable features, just a fuzzy picture of a face. Her hair was covered with a cap, so he couldn't see the color, other than it was a 'light' color (as in lighter than his hair color).

Scott woke up with a start, laying on his back, eyes wide staring at the ceiling. Tilly was next to him, still sleeping. Scott felt better than he did before, rested, but by no means better yet. Running a hand up Tilly's arm, Scott smiled when he felt her wake up. "Morning," he said simply.

Almost as soon as she got in to bed Tilly felt Scott move, and then his arm slipped around her waist. She was too cold and tired to protest, and she rather liked having him like that, it was a small crumb of comfort that she had craved for months. She quickly fell asleep and found herself dreaming about Ben. Everything they had done together since the first day at Hogwarts, right up to the point that he died. And then the common room, only instead of coming back as a ghost he came back as a real person, made of flesh and blood, not dead after all for it had all been a trick.

They lived a life time together in one short dream, a life time of three children, a loving family, she slept every night with Ben’s body folded around hers, woke every morning to his kiss, the pair of them making love dozens of times, the life that Tilly would have had if he had lived. She felt his kiss on her lips before someone stroking her arm woke her. For a second she had the dream and the reality confused, her lips were still tingling softly from the kiss and she could feel Ben next to her, waking her as he did every morning. And then reality flooded back, she was in yet another strange room, in another unfamiliar bed. She pushed the tears the threatened to rise away and rolled over, looking up at the face of Scott.

For a second, in the dim morning slight, with her eyes still filled with sleep, he looked like Ben. Or maybe it was just wishful thinking on her part. She wanted it to be Ben, she wanted him to live, she wanted to have that life with him. But she couldn’t have it, he was dead, he could never come back. What she did have was Scott, who was incredibly sweet and a lovely man in his own right. She needed to put Ben out of her mind and for Tilly there were two coping mechanisms, have sex or get drunk. There was no alcohol around, and after the dream she was in the mood for a physical release. Her hand trailed up his arm to his shoulder and then along his neck to his hair. Then she lifted her head off the pillow as she gently pulled him to her and kissed him with every ounce of passion and love that she had left in her.

Scott smiled at Tilly as she rolled over to look at him. He pretended not to notice the tears in the corners of her eyes. It was not uncommon to see Tilly fighting tears, and Scott has learned that ignoring them was the best course of action with Tilly. She didn’t want to talk about much with Scott, about anything other than sex. It wasn’t always ideal for Scott, but he’d learned to be happy with it. Although he knew that their relationship was not the way he wanted it to be, he could never have the relationship he wanted, one with Christy. She was gone from his life, no matter how he looked at it. And Tilly had been there when he needed somebody.

Tilly’s hand trailed up his arm, in reverse of the way he stroked her arm. Scott smiled down at her as her hand reached his hair. Gently Tilly pulled Scott to her, kissing him with an amount of passion that he was not quite ready for. He responded after a moment, rolling to his back and pulling Tilly on top of him. She straddled his hips as he wrapped his arms around her, locked in a tight embrace. Scott’s hands moved down her torso, pulling the hem of her shirt up gently. She didn’t protest (not that he thought she would), and Scott gently pulled her shirt over her head. He pulled her to him again kissing up her neck then back to her lips. Quickly the rest of their clothes came off, with a passion till…. BLACKOUT

Later…

Scott was crimson, he could not believe what had just happened. He’d been thinking about this for so long, but Scott knew better. Tilly did not allow him to talk about any of his feelings toward her, she never had. Nothing had changed in this situation, but he’d opened his big mouth and told her that he loved her. What was WRONG with him? Scott knew better than that! He'd only ever told one other person that he loved her before, and look how that had turned out. Did he want to chance fate AGAIN?? Sitting up, Scott sent a cursory glance toward Tilly, who was looking away from him. “Tilly, I… I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry…”

He had said it. Tilly knew he would, it was only a matter of time, and she had seen the look his eyes weeks ago. But now he had said it out loud and she was either going to have to say it back or hurt him, and she didn’t want to do either. He knew nothing about her, everything she had done the past few years, and she didn’t want him to know. She didn’t want to share it with anyone, she wanted to lock that dark part of her away and never let it out again.

It had been said in the heat of the moment, and she had come close to saying it back, but she had had to bite her tongue and stop herself from letting those words out. She was confused, she knew she was, she wanted Scott to be Ben and if she said what she wanted to she would never be sure which man she was saying it to. She couldn’t let herself get that close to Scott, not when her head was so messed up. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, struggling to look at him, but she knew she had to.

“Tilly, I… I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry…”

She had to say something, she couldn’t leave him hanging like this. She knew how hurt he had been after Christy had run off to her perfect little life with Daniel Cuthbert, she couldn’t do that to him. But nor could she tell him everything, and if she couldn’t do that then they didn’t have any kind of future. Her past would catch up to her eventually, such things always did, but she was determined that when it did catch her she would be on her own and no one else would be hurt by it.

“I know. I’m sorry too. Any other time, maybe it could work. But...there’s a lot I’ve done, none of it that I’m proud of. I can’t be in a relationship with anyone Scott. Certainly not right now. I’d just end up screwing it up and screwing you over. I just...I can’t do that, I can’t.”

The silence was killing him. He’d made an ass out of himself, that much was clear. And clearly Tilly wasn’t happy, she wasn’t speaking. It wasn’t normal for her not to speak, or yell, or anything. She was just staring, her back to him. It was almost as if she was looking at something else, but that just didn’t make sense. He’d apologized, but she was still silent. The only other thing he could think to do would be just to leave, which he was willing to do if it would make the silence stop.

Scott stared at Tilly’s back, dumbfounded. He was at a loss for what to say. Not be in a relationship right now was what she’d said. What had they been doing this whole time if they weren’t having a relationship? Sure, they’d never declared any feelings for each other, but he didn’t need to do that. He’d had that with Christy, and he’d gotten his heart broken. He thought how they felt about each other was just an understanding… not a nothing.

The silence stretched out longer and longer while Scott tried to process what Tilly had said. But try as he might, he couldn’t understand it, he wouldn’t. “You don’t want to screw me over… isn’t that what you’ve been doing?” he said, a bitter sarcasm trying to mask the pain in his voice. Scott slid across the bed, now forcing Tilly to look at him. He stared at her for a moment, then stood, fighting off the dizziness that attacked him as soon as he stood. He swayed a bit, and Tilly rushed up to help him. Scott shrugged her off, gathering his clothes as fast as he could. He threw his sweater on quickly, then turned to Tilly at the door. They looked at each other for a moment then, “Goodbye Tilly.”

He walked out the door into a very quiet Hogwarts. It was early in the day still, and the castle didn’t have much movement throughout it. Scott paused after he rounded a corner to put the rest of his clothes on. His clothes were covered in blood, and he pulled his wand out siphon it off. He had to rest against the wall for a moment, then moved to an empty office. Entering the office he found a near-full jar of Floo powder. Turning to the fireplace, Scott started a fire with his wand, then used the Floo powder get to an Order safe house, where Emily was living. They were hiding her from her captor, though nobody knew who he was, because Emily couldn’t identify him.
