We Ain't Dead (For Vee, and any other students)
« Thread Started on Sept 10, 2009, 4:16pm »

31st March 1983 around 5am

Lyonechka was tired, physically, mentally, and emotionally. The Hogwarts attack had gone on longer than they had expected, and while the Order had won there were a fair few hardcore Deatheaters that had escaped. Then there had been in the anxious wait to hear whether or not the camps had been liberated, when it was confirmed that those battles had been won as well the long process of reunited students with families and getting them to a safe place had begun.

Lyonechka had left that job to more organised people, he had gone around and made sure that all the students were in the Great Hall and then found his way down to the kitchen. A lot of the students hadn’t eaten a proper meal in years, and he wanted those that were going to be stuck at the school for a few hours to at least have a good breakfast. The House Elves had been happy to sort out such provisions, and soon the kitchen was filled with activity and the smell of bread, bacon, egg, pancakes and coffee. The old school plates were dug out of cupboards, the original silverware was polished up using elf magic, for some of the students it was going to be the first time they saw Hogwarts in all it’s glory.

If only he could find the old house banners that used to hang on the walls.

Still, he had done the next best thing, taken down the old ones. Back in the hall students were mingling together, some were sleeping at the tables with their heads propped on their arms, others were talking, some were staring at the Order members with a mixture of awe and fear on their faces. When Lyonechka returned to the hall he found Sasha trying to comfort a first year girl who wanted to see her Mum. After five minutes of trying to get her calm down the two brothers took her to Jason West, who was one of the organised people trying to sort everything out, and left her in his care. Now they just had to keep their fingers crossed and hope that the girl’s mother was alive. Lyonechka was about to go back to the kitchen and check on the status of breakfast when he felt Sasha elbow him in the ribs. His brother tilted his head towards one of the tables, a big smile on his face. It took a few seconds for Lyon to work out who he was pointing at, a girl with dark brown hair, even though her back was to them the pair could recognise that stature and body language anywhere. The pair crept up behind the unsuspecting student, and then Lyonechka dropped his hands on her shoulders.

“Gotcha.”

The day had started out like any other, and ended like Veronica could have never imagined. With some of the top evil professors off running errands for the King of all Assholes a lot of the other better treated students were becoming more carefree. They met up with old friends and caught up on "better times". There was joking and laughing going on, and the hard stares that those who were still loyal to the King Asshole and his ways could only send dark glares and plan to tattle when the evil professors returned. But for now, no one cared, things were...nice.

Then the sun dipped below the horizon, and as darkness settled on the school and the students went to their beds a battle began. Veronica had been lying on her bed, staring up at the ceiling when she heard the first cries of war. Her first thought: they were finally killing the students. Perhaps relaxing had been a mistake. She jumped out of bed and gathered her roommates together. Cooper had told her about secret tunnels that would lead to safe houses. They could use those to escape the massacre. She had thought to use them before, but Cooper had warned her that the tunnels were a labyrinth and without a guide there was a good chance they could get lost. They were too risky to take before. Why die if they didn't have to? But now, when death was just on the other side of the door, she was willing to chance it.

She and the other girls made their way to the common room where all of the other students had gathered. The room was filled with chaos of crying younger children and shouting older ones trying to gain some control. Veronica fought through the struggling students to reach one of the older boys who was rubbing his temples in frustration.

"Mike, what's going on?" she asked when she finally reached him. He sighed and looked down her helplessly.

"I've been trying to get everyone to calm down, but with the noises from outside everyone's afraid they're going to die." He sighed again and turned to one of his friends to try and come up with another plan.

Veronica set her jaw and was planning on yelling at everyone to shut the hell up, but she was interrupted by the common room door opening. Several strange men and a couple of women entered the room, wands drawn. The younger students screamed and ran to the corners of the room, some running back to the halls. Veronica and the older students didn't move.

"Those aren't the Dark Lord's soldiers," Mike said studying the group. Veronica agreed. They didn't look angry enough.

A man in the front saw the sensible older students and approached them, relief written all over his face.

"Thank Merlin you're all all right," he said, "We're from the Order."

"The Order?" Veronica asked. "Never heard of you."

The man gawked at her and Mike elbowed her in the side. She cringed and glared up at him.

"What's going on?" Mike asked.

"We've come to get the school back," the man said.

"Have you succeeded?" Veronica asked, still shooting glares towards Mike.

The man smiled down at her. That smile told her it all. They had won. She stared at him. "You're kidding."

"No. We've caught the Death Eaters off guard and now have them on the run. Nearly all of the castle is under our control."

"I don't believe you," Veronica shot back, her eyes narrowing. There was no way she was willing to believe that in one night some soldiers had not only broken into the school, but run off the very people that were making everyone's lives miserable. It wasn't that easy.

"Suit yourself, but we need to gather everyone in the Great Hall. From there we're taking you all to safe houses."

Veronica was about to argue with him, she wasn't going anywhere with a stranger, but Mike silenced her with a hand.

"Who are you?" Mike asked.

"Frank Longbottom," the man answered with a smile. Recognition registered on Mike's face and he smiled.

"My dad knows you! All right, I'll help you gather the younger ones. V, you too."

"But-"

"Just do it, V," Mike said with a hard glare. Veronica narrowed her eyes but turned to go fetch some of the other students with the help of Cooper's sister, Hannah.

That had been nearly five hours ago. Now nearly every student was sitting at one of the four tables in the Great Hall. Many were talking in hushed whispers, eyeing the Order soldiers. Some were asleep. Veronica was sitting next to Hannah who's eyes were wide and following some of the Order members. Veronica was sure Hannah wanted to ask her questions, but her tense composure told Hannah now was not a good time. So she sat silently beside the other girl. Veronica kept her eyes on the door, waiting for the peace to be disturbed.

"Gotcha."

Veronica's elbow shot out behind her and clipped the person in the ribs. She felt the hands that had grabbed onto her shoulders release and she wheeled around, her eyes narrowed as she prepared to punch her attacker in the face. The collective gasps stopped her tightened fist.

"Lyonechka?" Veronica stared at the familiar face of Lyon O'Malley as he was bent over at the waist. Her eyes fell on a snicker Sasha. She blinked and stared at the two of them, completely in shock. "What...."

She didn't even finish her question when she was out of her seat and wrapping bother O'Malley's in her arms. "I'm so glad to see you. I thought you were all dead! You weren't at the camp when I got back from school two years ago!" She stepped back and glared at the two of them. "What the hell happened?"

Veronica’s elbow shot out and hit Lyonechka in the stomach, knocking all the air out of him. Sasha, who had been expecting it, simply stood to one side and tried not to laugh as his brother doubled over in obvious amount of pain. This was Vee they were talking to, why did he think she wouldn’t have reacted that way? Luckily she didn’t land the punch she was aiming at him, instead she froze and stared at them in shock. A lot had changed since they had last seen her, weddings, babies, jobs, the Order, both of them looked a lot healthier for a start.

"Lyonechka?"
“Uh huh.”

God that hurt, that woman had an elbow you could use as a pool cue. Lyon was sure his lungs must have been pushed out and were lying on the floor of the hall, he was struggling to get his breath back. That would teach him to jump on anyone in the future. He was going to have a massive bruise in a few hours, and then how would he explain that to Tracey? ‘I grabbed a girl and she elbowed me’ was going to lead to tears and angry accusations from his girlfriend. A few second later Veronica leapt on both him and Sasha, pulling them in to a hug. Now THIS was something he could live with, as long as she didn’t wrap her arm around his neck too tightly.

"I'm so glad to see you. I thought you were all dead! You weren't at the camp when I got back from school two years ago!"

And then the hug was gone and she was glaring at that pair of them, he could hear a threat coming on, and a possible punch. Lyonechka edged around her, trying to avoid getting hit, and sat down in Veronica’s spot, still trying to get his breath back.

"What the hell happened?"

The two brothers looked at each other, wondering who should start. Then Lyon waved a hand at Sasha, indicating that he should speak first as his solar plexus was still too sore for him to do anything other than breathe.

“The Order got us out. Elizabeth West, the pregnant woman you met that Christmas, her husband is in the Order, when they rescued her and Charlotte they got us out too. Gav, Al and Lee have been living in Spain, the rest of us moved to the States. Al and Lee both joined the Order as soon as they were allowed, the rest of us just...help out a bit. We tried to get you out Vee, we really did, but we mistimed it by a few days.”
“We did the next best thing though. We got your parents out.”

Lyon smiled at Vee as she turned round to stare at him.

“Your family is alive Vee. Currently residing in a small village just outside Calais.”

Veronica stared at the both of them, Lyon who was sitting on the bench trying to catch his breath again and Sasha who was standing beside her, waiting for them to answer her question. She had been wanting to know exactly what had happened for years. The guards had told her they had been transferred to another camp, but when everything was merged into one she saw no hide nor hair of the O'Malley boys. Neither did she see her family. The simple explanation at that point was that they had been killed. Yet here two of them were, alive and well, and looking a lot healthier than she was. What had they been eating? Horses?

“The Order got us out." Veronica glanced at Sasha, who Lyon had suggested give her the answer. "Elizabeth West, the pregnant woman you met that Christmas, her husband is in the Order, when they rescued her and Charlotte they got us out too. Gav, Al and Lee have been living in Spain, the rest of us moved to the States. Al and Lee both joined the Order as soon as they were allowed, the rest of us just...help out a bit. We tried to get you out Vee, we really did, but we mistimed it by a few days.”

Veronica stared in shock and tried to register what Sasha had just told her, but Lyon interrupted.

“We did the next best thing though. We got your parents out.” Veronica stared at Lyon, her mouth gaping. “Your family is alive Vee. Currently residing in a small village just outside Calais.”

She didn't know what to feel. Her heart was soaring but restricted by the ribcage. Her family was alive, they hadn't been executed. They were safe. They were free. Her throat closed and she was suddenly having trouble breathing. Her vision became fuzzy as the tears fell. She covered her mouth with her hands in an attempt to stifle the sob. Several people had already been watching the scene out of curiosity and boredom, now nearly the whole room was watching her as she cried tears of joys.

"Is that King crying?"
"No way, King doesn't cry."
"I see tears."
"V doesn't cry unless..."
"You don't think Cooper..."
"Nah, those two guys are smiling."

Veronica rolled her eyes and quickly recovered, wiping the tears away from her eyes and catching her breath. She first wrapped Sasha in a tight hug, and then leaned down to Lyon.

"Thank you both so much," she said with an honest smile. She felt as though an immense weight had been lifted off of her shoulders and chest and she could finally breath and relax. It was a strange feeling that she didn't quite know how to cope with, but Hannah appeared by her side and hugged her shoulders, giving her the support she needed.

"So everyone had moved out of country huh," she finally said with a smile. "Shame I missed out on that boat. So what's the plan? You guys and your Order managed to retake the school. Now what?"

Most of the students had gone back to their whispers and sleep when they saw Veronica recover, but her words caught their attention. They waited on the edge of their seats for the O'Malley's answer.

Lyon and Sasha both exchanged grins when Veronica started to cry. It wasn’t that they were happy to see her in tears, but they knew that they were tears of happiness. They knew that their family had been lucky to be kept together in the camps, arrested together, thrown in to the camps together, and rescued together. It was only through Tayana, and their mother to an extent although she generally refused to talk about it, that they realised what it was like for your family to suddenly disappear. They had laughed when Tay had said that she and Lyubov had thought they were dead, and then they realised how serious she was. For a short time Alexei had thought Liadan was dead, until she had been moved to their camp, so he knew some of what their sister and mother had gone through. And Vee, she had gone through it too. Lyon couldn’t wait to take her back to Calais, he liked her family, he wanted to see them reunited.

Around them the students were commenting on Veronica crying. It sounded as if she had developed the same reputation at school that she had had in the camps. They had to chuckle at being referred to as “those two guys”, before Veronica first hugged Sasha and then leant down to hug Lyon.

"Thank you both so much,"

Lyon patted her back before releasing the hug. It was nice to know that at least one family was going to have a happy ending. Now they just needed to work out how to get everyone home. And they had to tidy the school up. And bury the dead, which was NOT a task Lyonechka was looking forward to. And then they would have to rebuild the whole of the wizarding world, clear out the Ministry, clean up Diagon Alley, get life back to normal. It was going to take years.

"So everyone had moved out of country huh. Shame I missed out on that boat. So what's the plan? You guys and your Order managed to retake the school. Now what?"

He looked around at all the expectant faces and realised that right now none of the kids cared about that. For so long their futures had consisted of simply surviving each day as best as possible, and hoping that their loved ones would survive as well. Even those that were Purebloods had been living in fear that one day the Deatheaters would turn on their families. They were children that had been forced to grow up far too fast. A future that involved years was not on their minds right now, they were concerned about the rest of the day and the week, and possibly the month for the older students. He took a deep breath, wondering exactly what the Order could do that would bring back some of the fun.

“Well for a start, everyone is getting a proper meal in about five minutes. We’ve liberated the camp as well so you guys will be with your families as soon as we can organise it.”

He noticed a few faces fall at the mention of families, there were plenty of children that were missing one or both parents and already knew that they had died.

“For those that don’t have anyone to go back to, we’ll find people that can take you in. No one is going to be alone, I promise. While you lot are stuck here waiting for some of the camps backlog to be dealt with we’ll feed you all, find some proper clothes for everyone that needs them, get the common rooms fixed up properly. Hell I can probably sort out a few quidditch matches for those that knows how to ride a broom.”
“What we really need is someone in charge of the school. Dumbledore is...unavailable at the moment.”
